AF1 said that's what they are doing, also his navigator thinks the GEPs are SAM sites so he avoids them:>) Golf Club said AF1 will have his circuits shortly, right now all they have is the Orderwire. At 0119z heard Golf Club tell AF1 he should have the 1A, AF1 said he'll check them. AF1 said the circuits check good. AF1 also told Golf Club that they were getting intermittent rings in the last station on their arrival and now departure. At 0127z heard Monarchy calling Golf Club, Monarchy asked if Golf Club is all set for "this". Golf Club said he's going to handle it just like a transition. He's going to swap circuits and leave the Orderwires up. At 0129z heard Monarchy call Dandelion, Monarchy asked if Dandelion was ready. Monarchy then called Golf Club and asked if he was ready. Golf Club said that they just took another power hit. Monarchy says he noticed that. The Orderwire then noised up. After a minute Monarchy called Golf Club, Golf Club said that they took another power hit. At 0131z Golf Club called AF1, no reply. At 0131z Golf Club was talking to the new Monarchy, old Dandelion at Andrews. Golf Club told Monarchy that he went ahead and transitioned even though he lost the new Dandelion, old Monarchy probably at Offutt. Golf Club even lost AF1, he's at the same station. Dandelion then came on and asked if they have 9 & 12. Golf Club said that they do. Golf Club then called AF1 again, no reply. No crickets on the Orderwire. Golf Club said he should have B & C now, they weren't going to Monarchy earlier. At 0227z heard Golf Club calling Monarchy, Golf Club told Monarchy that on the Low MUX C he sees the same level on the radio leaving towards Monarchy as B. The difference is that it doesn't sound the same. It sounds like something is hung up on the distant end where ever they are sending it from. It doesn't sound normal. When the 355 carrier was present all parties were heard on the Orderwire. When the 355 carrier faded out I had to switch to the 267 carrier and all I heard were the ground parties. Operator chatter was very active so I'll just give times generally. Some of the voices from the ground parties were Waldorf ops. I don't know if they were all at Waldorf or they were at other GEPs. Comms. started at 0945z "I don't hear anything either, we see signal coming in." This was a ground party. I couldn't tell if it was Waldorf, Spreader, or not. The memory ch. had 267.660 and since the signal was centered on 267.600 the audio was badly distorted. I tuned the other radio to 267.600 and heard another ground party, Vagabond, say " After tonight nothing surprises me." "We do not have good "bert(?)" sync though." "Can we try going to internal "berts" ?" "What does that do to my clock?" "Roger, but I'm not sure what happens to my clock when I go to "bert". ""Cause you're not getting good from me?" "Roger, that makes sense." The 355 carier picked up and I heard Spreader and Modified, Aircraft, Modified: "Let's walk through our modem change to make sure they are the same." Spreader: "O.K. cause I never changed them since Monday, except Name, they were using first names alot on the Orderwire, told me to change. O.K., where do you want me. Vagabond came back on, "Modified, Vagabond, did you just turn shortly a little while ago, because I dropped all the way to a neg 5 on the eb/No(?) and it's back up to a ten" Spreader: "I'm still hanging around ten but it's dropped to ten dot one now with that last either movement in the plane or the IF level one of the two effected it, it started on a downward climb, I still got ten three, a ten three to a ten one is where it's moving about, you want to go to 23 to make sure, (noisy again) " Modified: "It doesn't matter, we're still headed south, I don't think we made any changes" Spreader: "O.K., got you, did you change IFs?" Modified: "Still at minus twenty(noise)" Switched back to the 267 carrier. Spreader: "O.K., I'm at ten dot one right now" Unknown: "Roger sir, we have you at about ten right now, it's dropping somewhere between a seven and ten but I have a good receive sync right at this second" Spreader: "What's my eb/No(?), I'm at a negative 15, I'm going to go to a 18, you have an 18 so you may be taking a hit at this moment, I went 3 dB, you want me to go 3 longer?, O.K., this will be a negative 21, and it's in, we don't know if we went through it or not. I'll give it a 23 now, no I haven't done anything yet, ah now you got negative 23, sir, it's data?, alright I'll give you all I got, you got it 25, I can't give you anymore, let me go back to your... what I'm getting from you, name said 21 but I don't believe that, 10 point 1 I'm sorry, yeah I got a 9 point 8" Spreader called a name and Vagabond answered. Spreader asked Vagabond what his eb/No(?) was. Vagabond: "Bouncing around a bit, but it looks like it's hanging around a ten point two, drops down to a nine point four, nine point five", (now talking with the plane) "What leg are you on?" Spreader then came on and told Modified "I think you better check where you are because I've got a 4.4 AGC on you, got a lot of AGC" Vagabond then talked to the plane, "The only time we seemed to have lost you is when you went out over the water, O.K., you got a mountain down there?, I don't see any mountain between you and me" Spreader then came on and called a name, Vagabond told Spreader to go ahead. Spreader said he called the wrong guy and then called another name, apparently the guy on the plane. Spreader: "I initially came right out of the radio right into the COMQUEST and tried to eliminate things so that's where I stand right at the moment and I don't think that helped any it didn't start coming in until you changed your transmit IF level I took a hit there for a second, I'm back to a ten point three" Second Op at Spreader: "Yes sir will do, if you drop off, I was just talking to name,(op from Waldorf), looks like your signal is so strong on the analog side we doubt seriously unless you go beyond point 2 Bravo we probably won't lose you, you getting ready to turn?, oh great, O.K." Spreader: "We're starting to lose him now" Second Op at Spreader: "You're starting to lose analog?" Spreader: "Yeah, we're down to a 2 dot 8" Second OP at Spreader: "I've lost you eb/No(?) wise, yeah, now you come back in just for a second but it's just a blank" Unknown: "I'm still good, how's the Fireberd running?" Second OP at Spreader: "Not worth a darn up here" Unknown: "It's in the bunkhouse, isn't it?" Second Op at Spreader: "Roger" Unknown: "Where are you?" Second Op at Spreader: Name was back here a second ago telling me it's not running right" Vagabond called Modified, Vagabond: " Where you going to go from there, are you going to head due north as currently scheduled, or are you going to head towards Seven Charlie?, that means that they would probably head on up to the crossover between the original 9 and 1 Alpha maybe and then cut back the way you came in?, Understand, I rather you head north as far as you can until they start to worry about fuel, your gonna be over the mountains I realize but we should be able to pick you up for a while, just keep it north til you drop" Unknown: "I still have it here it hasn't wavered" Vagabond then called Sherlock, no answer. A guy then came on and called an OP at Waldorf by his name and asked how the Fireberd was running. Waldorf Op: "I don't know, it's not running, hold on for a minute, hold on for a minute name, Sherlock this is Vagabond" Sherlock: "Go ahead" Vagabond: "Roger sir, on RF ch. 6 can you look and see if you see Modified and if you do can you bring us at least an Orderwire through to us?, we'll coordinate if you can get some AGC on him, he's down your way" Sherlock then called Vagabond a short while later. Vagabond answered and the Sherlock told Vagabond: "I've got it up and I'm receiving AGC from him" Vagabond: "Good signal from him?, what we would really like to do is key down and have you key up and we'll pass the Orderwire along to him that's all we're really using right now, get an Orderwire and get rid of some of the noise this way, are you ready Sherlock?" Sherlock: "Yes" Vagabond: "O.K. sir, my count or your count?" Sherlock: "Your count" Vagabond: "O.K. my count, 1 2 3", The 267 carrier dropped at 1004z. The 267 carrier came back on at 1008z. I still have about 2 hours of tape to go through. They were done testing at 1202z. That's all for now, 73 de OBK Time for a Dominion :>) Subject: More 267.600/355.000 WBFM Spreader, Vagabond, Modified, Agrio(?) in N. Va. 5/28 At 1008z the 267.600 carrier was back up. Heard Vagabond calling Modified, Vagabond: "We can hardly hear you sir, I don't know whether it's the station set or what, we've got a good signal on you. Ah we got you much better sir, we were trying to put you down in the other station to get a little more power on you and you drifted this way so we have you up this way now. I've got a ten five on eb/No." Vagabond then called a name and asked him if he had the external two to Vagabond. The other op said that he does. Vagabond asked if he was locked in. The other op said it's breaking up, what he want's to do is talk to another name and he'll be right back to Vagabond. Back on the 355 carrier heard Vagabond call Modified, Vagabond: "What we'd like to do is ask you if you would to do an internal BERT towards us and obviously towards the other, I've got you between a nine and a half and a ten in an eb/No but our BERTs are not running well, I want to see what the problem is" Modified: "O.K., I have my internal BERT running here now" Vagabond: "Roger, running to the nine(?) minus one?" Modified: "Roger" Vagabond: "O.K." Another voice came on, sounded like a regular Waldorf op, "I lost my sync" Vagabond: "Yeah, I lost it too, did you try, did you unkey?" Other op: "No sir I'm still keyed up" Vagabond: "No, I'm talking to Modified" Modified: "No I did not" Vagabond: "O.K., cause I lost you too, standby" Other op: "I mean it went dead in the water" Vagabond: "Roger, same here, I think he must be off the air, Modified?" Modified: "I don't think so" Vagabond: "It's strange we both lost you simultaneously" Modified: "Let me turn this BERT off" Vagabond: "I still don't see him" Modified: "Did I come back?" Vagabond: "I just now got you back, eleven point six" Modified: "That's when I turned the BERT off" Vagabond: "That don't make sense, unless when you go to BERT you go internal clock or something?, I'm down as low as a seven point four eight point two bouncing around a bit, I do get a couple of faults from time to time but I'm not going to ????? setting now, that's relative" Modified: "Transition back to Waldorf and see if you can receive and transmit at the same time" Vagabond: "We can do that sir and after we do that we'd like to have you give us an RF loop to see if it makes a difference, but let's not do both at the same time" Modified: "O.K." Vagabond: "Standby" Another familiar Waldorf ops voice: "You all are in control of my rack" Vagabond then called Modified, The Waldorf op came on again, "This is Spreader you're in charge of my rack" Vagabond: "Roger, we understand that, be advised of his callsign" Spreader: "Spreader, the stuff you do in your yard" Vagabond then called Modified, Vagabond: "Roger sir, be advised I'm still in internal BERT I'm going to take it out but I am transmitting and I see you at a nine point seven" Modified: "I don't have you yet" Vagabond: "Let me drop my BERT out" Modified: "Picked you up right away" Spreader: "We just kicked it up to high power" Vagabond: "Oh O.K., we got high power to you now, you got me?" Modified: "Yeah I got you now" Vagabond: "O.K. let me drop my BERT" Spreader: "I'm still running about ten six" Vagabond: "Roger, O.K. I have my BERT off but now I've lost you sync" Modified: "You lost sync just because you turned your BERT off?" Vagabond: "I don't know, I have a zero eb/No, let me unkey and see if I pick you back up, yep as soon as I unkey I pick you back up at a ten point four to ten point five, almost a ten six, I key back up go to an immediate fault and my eb/No goes away" Modified: "I'm getting BERT sync when you're keyed up too" Vagabond: "You are getting a BERT sync with us?" Modified: "Yes" Vagabond: "Roger sir, could you give me an RF loop?" Modified: "You mean without, you don't want the modem in my circuit" Vagabond: "You can just try it RF loop on your modem or what ever you call it, your end loop or whatever" Modified: "Far end" Vagabond: "A far end loop yeah" Modified: "O.K. I'll do that" Vagabond: "Stay within the modem" Modified: "Roger, you have a far data loop" Vagabond: " O.K., I still have a bad eb/No, no eb/No at all coming through, at least record it standby" Spreader: "You need to key it up now" Vagabond: "I am keyed" Modified: "My modem is in sync, my BERT is in sync" Vagabond: "Roger, I show nothing here, I show transmit enabled, I can see power out on the spectrum analyzer but I have no receive eb/No, alright so that takes care of that, Modified if you can try doing an actual RF loop, just doing a 70Mhz loop from your transmitter back to your receiver bypassing the entire modem, see if that makes a difference" Modified: "Bypass the modem?" Vagabond: "Roger sir, just take your connectors off and do a connector loop transmitter back to receiver" Modified: "O.K." the 355 carrier noised up. Back to the 267 carrier. Vagabond: "Woooh, starting to loose you" Spreader: "You need a TNC female female " Vagabond: "Hey, do you think we should try another RF?" Spreader: "Watch what you pick" Vagabond: "I was looking at two" Spreader: "You can't use two, that's primary, unless you go out there 25 26" Vagabond: "Why don't we do a six and one swap?, what we got up?, Modified, this is Vagabond, roger sir, we'd like to go ahead and swap the two transmitter freqs., currently we were using 6 for the Orderwire and 1 for the test, like to set up and change the freqs. for RF 1 for the Orderwire and RF 6 for the test and if it doesn't work...." (then the real voice of Vagabond came on and told this Vagabond that they want him to null out the modem first) The other Vagabond said "roger". Modified: "You want that before the RF loop?" The original Vagabond: "Disregard the RF loop if you're going to go change freqs., and if we have trouble, it noises up to bad we'll holler on the thing and take it back" They then switched RFs. A carrier on 326.000 was at S-4, 382.350 was at S-2 and a carrier on 267.600 was at S-4. Heard Agrio(?)calling Vagabond on the 382 carrier,Agrio: "Roger sir, we're ready to swap here" Vagabond: "Roger sir, so am I, I'll count, 1 2 3," Then back on the 267 carrier "Agrio this is Vagabond, Roger, roger, I wonder where that noise was coming from that could be causing a big portion of our problem, I think we're running into RF interference and I end up with noise when you came across also, let's look on the chart and see if there's anything else we can use for this test, I'll be back" Vagabond then called Modified: "Yeah we're losing you, roger, I have no eb/No from you right now, are you transmitting?, are you normaled up now, you still in a loop?, O.K. I'm surprised I have no eb/No from you, O.K., and you're getting good BERT too?, O.K., mine's not, mine's out completely that's why I wanted to go to internal BERT there for a while but I don't know what happened when you went to internal BERT and why it went away, what's your schedule now?, as far as flight plan?, O.K. I see Ocean City(Md.) but I don't see Snow Hill(Md.), O.K., so you're going to stay in the area a little longer then?, any chance you're going to come here and land and get some fuel?, Roger sir, understand, oh is it, O.K., it just doesn't show it here, you're flying?, I have nothing from you I don't know why all of a sudden I have no, let me re, Why don't we do a simultaneous modem reset here?, I'm off, powering back up, Did you make any modem changes with the other station other then, I know you were playing with levels I'm not sure where you are level wise, O.K., we're starting to loose you, I'm not sure where you're at, If you're up where I think you are we shouldn't be loosing you, you should be right in the center of our area, Is that it, O.K., I'm still showing a fault, let me see what I have here, no eb/No, let me unkey for a second you're up and good if I let it run for a second and stabilize?, O.K., you're looking good?, O.K., standby, I'm going to unkey see if I pick myself up, Yeah, as soon as I unkey 21, Well it jumps to 21 for a second never mind, false modification here, ten point four nine point six, but it did jump to 21 as soon as I unkeyed" Spreader: "Spreader's got a seven" Vagabond: "O.K., I got a fault light on and off intermittent here I'm running around ten four I do have a receive sync finally, suggestion is I try a retransmit, put my transmitter back up and then possibly lowering my IF, Let's see if I come back up in sync, O.K., my eb/No has dropped off, I'm sorry, you're noising up really bad, standby, as soon as I unkey you clear up, I'm interfering with you, Yeah, so we got a freq. problem here" Spreader: "Want to try another freq. go RF 8" Vagabond: "We only got another 20 mins. in the area from what I understand, I'm going to try lowering my power first, standby sir, I'm unkeyed right now but I want to try dropping my IF closer to 25 and see if that might help as soon as I can find it here, O.K., I'm at a neg 15 right now I'm going to drop it to a neg 20, ah come on, O.K., our IF level is now at a neg 20 let me reengage, ah power, noise comes right back up on the Orderwire let me try 25, O.K., I'm at a twenty I just did a record on that let me go to 25, I don't seem to be effecting anything, what does your eb/No look like there Modified?, I'm sorry I can't hear you, I just unkeyed, say again what you were saying, I dropped off let me see if I have anything from you at all I don't think so, I have no eb/No from you right now either this Orderwire's noising up even with out me transmitting right now, you must be getting close to a fringe area somewhere, I'm not sure where you're at, are you heading out to the water?" There was about 10 - 15 minutes of silence on the Orderwire. Then Vagabond called Modified, Vagabond: "Be advised that I'm transmitting to you, don't know if you're getting anything but I'm receiving a eb/No of about 14, at the same time I'm transmitting, that's a first, no I have RF out, I'm definitely sending RF out, are you on the same transmitter that you were on before?" Spreader: "We're also taking a tremendous amount of errors but the sync light is staying lit most of the time now, we're taking hits on it but it's much better then it was" Vagabond: "Your BERT is not synced?, do we want to try internal?, eb/No is ranging between 13 and 14" Spreader: "Be advised that Spreader has a 15 eb/No" Vagabond: "Our BERT is running rather well not perfectly but it's running rather well we've got a sync light that's staying on I wouldn't consider it ATM(?) quality but we are up" Spreader: "You got it, make sure I go high power when you go, I'm looking at it now I'm running continuous errors but this is the first time we've had a normal sync light for a few seconds" Vagabond: "You want me to drop my transmit and see if your receive sync comes in better on your BERT?" Spreader: "Hold on for a second let me check some stuff down here, O.K. do it, do it" Vagabond: "O.K., standby, come on, the light's not going out, I can not do a transmit disable, something is wrong here, apparently I am, I'm going to have to do a modem reset which may be why I'm receiving and transmitting, but I do see myself transmitting, O.K., I'm going to do a modem reset, standby, I saw us drop off the air so I know I was transmitting" Spreader: "We're up to a 21 on the eb/No" Vagabond: "Gees, I'm back up on the air" Spreader: "We had a 21 eb/No, let's see what we got now" Vagabond: "Just as soon as name got on the Orderwire" Spreader: "Yeah, that's what it is, we got 21" Vagabond: "O.K., drop your transmitter and see what you see, let me just see what my eb/No is first, O.K. I'm running about a twelve point seven, let me just record this please, O.K. dropping transmit, eb/No went up to a fourteen point seven now" Spreader: "I've got the same indications here as far as the hits and stuff" Vagabond: "O.K., eb/No is still climbing to fifteen two" Spreader: "Roger, Spreader has a 21 we're going to set him up, do you want to transition him?" Vagabond: "Name, you want to see if Modified is ready for that?" Waldorf op: "Modified, you ready for that?, O.K. we're going to do it" Vagabond: "Modified, Vagabond be advised that when we were off for a while I also reset my IF level to a neg 15" Spreader: "We're taking errors out of Spreader but we are able to hold sync a whole lot better, well we just lost it just then but about the same as we had here, the same indications, very short duration, ?19 in block we think it was?, it was probably hard to see it on the modem, it is in sync, solid lock or is it taking hits?, bit errors are eating me alive and every three to four seconds I take a crash on the sync". Vagabond: "I'm still reading you at a neg 16 here on the eb/No, I just changed my receive, I guess I'll change them both in case we transition back, alot better then we're doing, alright I'm going to half right now on my mod, do you know how to do that Spreader" Spreader: "That's the receive data rate, which direction do you want me to do first though?" Vagabond: "You gotta do both mod and demod" Spreader: "What's the half that's 7 what?, O.K., code rate" Vagabond: "Go to your modulator and demodulator like we did earlier" Spreader: "Yeah, I'm in demod" Vagabond: "You're going to have to cycle all the way around because you're like one step above it" Spreader: "To change the code rate I got 3/4" Vagabond: "Right you're going to have to continue bumping that through" Spreader: "For code rate, you want to go half?" Vagabond: "Right" Spreader: "VIP?" Vagabond: "Roger" Spreader: "We're there, eb/No of 15 it didn't really change, 16, there's a 21 now" Vagabond: "I'm getting faults, he must be flying away from me I'm not sure" Spreader: "What's the IF level there?, I got a 25 here" Vagabond: "Vagabond's at a 15" Spreader: "Yeah, I'm at a negative 25, I double checked" Vagabond: "Roger, I'm not transmitting right now anyway,I can do that when needed, bottom line is right now I'm still receiving you at about a 15 or so on the eb/No taking faults from time to time, that's correct, the receive BERT is at setting at Vagabond through Spreader, I have to talk to you on behalf of Vagabond here, I don't believe it is, how's it run clean all night?" Spreader: "We've never had anywheres close the error rate, you know it just keeps counting up, you couldn't run any kind of thing with this, we seem to be holding sync something we haven't been able to do for a long time, actually it's about 15 - 20 seconds with out the sync breaking up" Vagabond: "Can you change your receive side from Spreader back to Vagabond?, see if it runs the BERT any cleaner?" Spreader: "What I'm saying is I'm watching it right now, Who am I watching?" Vagabond: "If you did a full transition you're watching Spreader" Spreader: "Roger" Vagabond: "What he can do is split the transition, so we're still going to transmit out of Spreader and receive through Vagabond" Spreader: "I'm running a solid 21 on eb/No" Vagabond: "Just to see if it clears up the BERT any" Unknown: "O.K., we done it and it's still the same trash" Vagabond: "O.K." Unknown: "About the same as it is down at Spreader" Vagabond: "O.K., I'm running about a fifteen four here, its dropped to a thirteen three but I'm running errors here I can see it" Spreader: "Errors just counting up, the sync seems to be holding better then its held anytime, I just took a hit then, another hit, another hit, earlier in the evening the light was just kind of flashing all the time, where do you want to leave this thing here or there?" Vagabond: "Is it running any better either way?" Spreader: "No, about the same" Vagabond: "And he's still running rather error free, so he's better off on his receive then we are" Spreader: "Roger" Vagabond: "No, no better then Spreader, in fact Spreader is probably better they have a 21 eb/No on you" Spreader: "We're down to a 16 17 here" Vagabond: "O.K." Unknown: "We're going to put it back in Spreader, I think the RF is over driving the whole mess" Spreader: "I'm still hanging in there with a negative 25 on my input" Unknown: "What happens when you drop it lower?" Spreader: "I cant" Vagabond: "And that's his output anyway, he's not changing his input" Unknown: "The output of his transmitter into the modulator" Vagabond: "That's what I'm saying, his output is not, the aircraft is receiving five by, pretty close to it" Unknown: "I'm just wondering if he dropped it another 10dB wouldn't he be a little bit better?, or if maybe the aircraft dropped his 10dB " Vagabond: "He's at a 22 if I remember right so he can do another 3 dB and that's it" Unknown: "Do another 3, go to minimumal power, minimumal IF and see what happens" Spreader: "It looks like it's not changed at all" Unknown: "Same indications here" Vagabond: "O.K., my eb/No is about the same thirteen point five, somewhere in there" Spreader: "Mine is swinging between a 15 and 16 right now with the IF change, slightly yes, my AGC is 123, I'm showing it 117 right now, 110" Vagabond: "My AGC is pretty close I got 124, yep, hard to tell when it's taking errors how much it adds or detracts from it, I'm sure they are, now all we have to do is figure out how to keep the signal up when we're in the area, I assume somebody is keeping track of your flight plan as well as time, O.K., I'm trying to figure out what else to do to take advantage of the fact that you are in the area, you still heading East or you turning around and heading West at any point, I knew eventually, you want to try one half at a time or you want to try both of them, you want to go both transmit and receive?, locked, my modem's locked again, found out the hard way sometimes I thought my modem was locked up, it's not I've got ah, when I'm half way through when I do a DP7 and printed out half of it until its printed out the other half of it you can't do anything on the front panel" Spreader: "What did you change it to?" Vagabond: "Unencoded" Spreader: "O.K., where's that?" Vagabond: "It's in the same area where the Vitterbis were, both mod and demod sir" Spreader: "O.K, I'm in demod right now" Vagabond: "O.K., we came back up as soon as I changed my demod, I've got a 13 point 1 on the eb/No I don't know if we're going to run any better as far as the BERT is concerned but it looks good here, mine is but I'm not up, we're waiting for Spreader, he's a little slower, yeah, he's farther south that's true" Spreader: "I don't have all of my options under the tree, which heading is it off of?" Vagabond: "Same place as it was for all the others, under code rate" Spreader: "Got that" Vagabond: "Alright, then you go to modulator and look at the transmit code rate" Spreader: "O.K., I'm in receive code rate you're saying it's right there" Vagabond: "Roger, go over to the black T keep blinking until you get uncoded" Spreader: "Oh I see it, O.K., I've got receive sync now let me do the mod" Vagabond: "Could also be the Corioliuos(sp?) effect as you get further south" Spreader: "eb/No is 15 now, there's a 17, a fourteen two" Vagabond: "Hopefully you're recording all of this" Spreader: "Name is, he's doing something" Vagabond: "Hopefully it's DP7" Spreader: "He's shaking his head yes, I stand corrected he's not recording it the computer is" Vagabond: "As long as he's causing the computer to record it that's good" Spreader: "He's constantly hitting the key, the only time he leaves the keyboard is when he has to relieve some coffee" Vagabond: "Or burn a weed" Spreader: "I don't know if he's burned one, (another voice came on, "Yes he has we've seen him open the door") Spreader starts laughing his head off and says "Oh yes he has" This is long enough. I still have about another hour of tape to go through. I'll probably get to it next Tues. That's all for now, 73 de OBK Time for a Dominion :>) Subject: Even More 267.600/355.000 WBFM Vagabond, Spreader, Modified, Agrio(?) in N. Va. 5/28 Heard on the 267 Orderwire Vagabond asking Modified, "You want to try transitioning back to see how it effects your, are you getting a good receive BERT now Modified?, O.K. then that should make the transition faster, I've got you at about a neg 13 and a half somewhere in that area as far as eb/No is concerned" Spreader: "I got a statement I need to throw out, that last change I hadn't been getting any intermittent faults" Vagabond: "Roger" Spreader: "I don't know about your direction, but mine this is no intermittent faults right now" Vagabond: "I just cleared my fault log let me watch it for a little bit and see what it does" A Waldorf voice: "The Fireberd 6000 looks same on both of them though and I don't see any real difference in any of the FECs" Vagabond: "Roger, (talking to Modified), no it doesn't unless we get a timing problem and I'm trying to figure out how we could have a timing problem that worked so good before, but you'd think that doppler would be both ways, I mean your's is a positive our's is a positive your's is a negative our's is a negative, I would think, I'm hanging in there at about a 13 to 14 on the eb/No so if you want to transition back up here we can make it work we can make it happen, got that name?" Spreader: "Say again sir" Vagabond: "They'd like to transition back" Spreader: "O.K., we want to bring the radio and everything up this way?" Vagabond: "Roger sir" Spreader: "O.K., we'll set it up and do it" Spreader: "Spreader is still hanging in there with 14 to 16 on eb/No" Vagabond: "Roger, we're about the same 13 eight, I see us up" Unknown: "Yeah, we're up" Spreader: "And we're down" Unknown: "Rog" Vagabond to Modified, "It didn't?" Unknown: "That's because we're good" Vagabond: "Well, there's one success for the test, and you didn't get a fault on your fault log?, Great" Spreader: "Should have got some sort of hit, it's a few milliseconds both transmitters are on the air" Vagabond: "Yeah, but we've taken all the coding out too so there's probably some cleanness in there too, I'm running about a 14 seven now, 14 six" Spreader: "I'm about the same" Waldorf voice: "O.K., we'll go back the other way" Spreader: "I had a solid fail there and I lost the receive from the aircraft" Vagabond: "I did not, don't know what caused that, I have no hits here at all" Spreader: "I've got a 17 eb/No" Unknown: "Have you got anything now" Spreader: "I've got transmitter up yeah" Unknown: "O.K. we did the transition, did you see that name?, (Apparently the a/c guy), how big?, yeah that's what we figured about 3500 bits" Vagabond: "Well things work slower in the south, as you come up north it works better" Spreader: "I've taken another fault, it's back in sync" Vagabond: "I've been running no faults at all here as far as the modem is concerned since we went to unencoded" Unknown: "We're going to bring him back here because we got a real high AGC on the Orderwire so I think he's probably up this way closer" Spreader: "I've got something I need to throw out, as name is going in there requesting status if I have a fault stored it automatically clears, (to the a/c), It does?" Vagabond: "Not just by doing a DP7 it doesn't clear the fault log" Spreader: "All he's doing is AGs and EB" Unknown: "We're getting ready to do the transition on my count 1 2 3, and we just did it, did you see the hit?, right, well this thing happens a little better one way then it does the other sometimes" Spreader, to the a/c "We are doing it here when we clear the fault log, he's doing SF and it must clearing it then" Vagabond: "For what it's worth Spreader we were able to keep logs running on this thing here just by typing in whatever we felt like typing in on the logs and hitting return I get a time stamp and the modem goes "huh?", and that's it" Spreader: "We finally figured out every time he types in a CF it clears the fault log" Vagabond: "Oh yeah" Spreader: "I didn't know that, I'm over here watching my COMQUEST name's punching and it goes away, he's saying "I'm not doing anything" " Vagabond: "I've been doing DP7s most of the time it takes a little longer but it's O.K., I show a clear log, a fault log here and I'm running about a 14 four, 14 five right now, I just wish our BERT was running cleaner" Vagabond to the a/c " Say again please, your signal is what?, I'm looking at the spectrum analyzer cause we're up transmitting right now, I'm looking at my transmit on the digital and my transmit on the Orderwire we've got slightly more power on the digital the we do the analog but that's about it, we can do that but we're going to have to coordinate that through all the DSUs as well, do you want to do that?, is that 512 even or do you remember what the channel number is for that data rate?, well I mean the transmit data rate that we have to plug into the modem, O.K., it is even O.K" Unknown: "We have a suggestion here at this end of the shop, is this through a far data loop again, this is the first time we've had a decent link and let's see if that runs anything for us, (the plane replied), Roger sir" Vagabond: "Yeah, I should get a fault when you do that for a second or so, O.K., I didn't even receive a fault on that" Unknown: "I did not see any change in the data error rate, man I'm taking the same sync loss's and everything so it doesn't appear to be doing any different" Vagabond: "The next logical thing to do before they leave the area would be is to go down to a lower data rate" Unknown: "We can do that it's going to take a little bit of setting those two modems , ahh DSUs take about another minute and a half" Vagabond: "Plus we got to change the data rate on the BERT too" Unknown: "Ah, that's automatic" Vagabond: "Unfortunately it's not name, we found out the hard way if you don't set the internals pretty close to your externals it doesn't work right" Unknown: "Yeah, anyway this test is the same as the other so I guess you may as well normal it up, if you want to drop the data rate give me a number and we'll work with it" Vagabond: "512" Unknown: "We can do that, you want to start setting it up now?" Vagabond: "Somebody all ready has it looks like" Unknown: "Well I have to cut the DSUs have to have the ports changed on them" Vagabond : "I mean I just went into fault here so, Modified did you change your data rate already?, O.K. cause I'm in fault right now" Unknown: "I'm seeing the same trash here that I've been seeing " Got a chance to transcribe for an hour, more to come Tues. That's all for now, 73 de OBK Time for a Dominion :>) Subject: Son of Even More 267.600/355.000 WBFM Vagabond, Spreader, Modified, Agrio(?), in N. Va. 5/28 Vagabond: "Standby, let me take a look and see what I got here, I've got no eb/No from you" Spreader: "I don't either" Unknown: "What am I looking at?" Spreader: "We dropped at the same time" Vagabond: "I don't know what you're looking at Sir" Unknown: "Agrio, this is Vagabond, yeah let me see here, you should have them Sir, 9 & 10 as a matter of fact that's all you really have, 9 & 10 right now, I have a pretty good AGC on Modified also so I don't know why you guys are loosing signal" Vagabond: "Both of us lost it, I'm still showing faults and no eb/No, no Sir, I still have no eb/No from you I don't know about Spreader" Spreader: "I never did get it back so I went to change my receive data rate to 512 and he's not there either so I'm going back" Vagabond: "Ah Modified have you taken you RF data loop down?" Unknown: "Ahh, negative Sir" Vagabond: "No, no, not you Modified" Unknown: "Alright, I forget who I am" Vagabond: "Let me do a FMESSED(?) modem reset here, standby we should drop my transmit your going to lose my transmit, we verified that we did not change to 512 yet we are still at ahh, roger understand, standby" Unknown: "I'm back to 1536 I verified that he wasn't on 512 he's not and I went back to 1536" Vagabond: "Do you see him?" Unknown: "No" Vagabond: "O.K." Unknown: "At either spot" Vagabond: "Roger" Vagabond: "You did a reset on your end as well?, alright, I see nothing from you, absolutely nothing, let me drop my transmitter off for a second, waiting for you to do something, no we're dead from you, I've rekeyed, Spreader you're still not seeing anything from him?" Spreader: "No Sir" Vagabond: "Roger,I don't know what the situation is we've got good AGC so it's not that" Unknown: "I've got a receive sync" Vagabond: "So do I, and I've got about a 15 eb/No" Unknown: "That's what I got, I've took a hit there" Vagabond: "Me too, yeah, I've got about a 14 seven from you" Unknown: "And we're identical, I'm up to a 16, back down to a 14" Vagabond: "Do we want to change data rates now?, Roger" Spreader: "Where's that 512 ???," Vagabond: "Did you change your DSU?" Spreader: "I've got a receive sync" Vagabond: "Have you changed your DSU rate though?" Spreader: "No I'm going up there now" Vagabond: "I'm showing an eb/No of 21 from you right now, of course I haven't changed my DSU rate yet either" Vagabond: "Modified, Vagabond, roger Sir, we're in that mode now when I first came up I was at neg 21 but now I'm down to a neg 14 I'm not sure what your direction is as far as my eb/No, I'll look for it, how are you running as far as your BERT test?, O.K., so eb/No is high enough we're unencoded the only thing we can do now is maybe put some coding in, we're down to half the data rate we were before, a third of the data rate, I say we're at a third of the data rate we were before just about and you're still seeing the same errors, it's almost as if we have a timing problem, I agree, I'm just trying to figure out were the timing issue is, I'm not sure how we can set the configuration on the ground then, we'd have to take the recovered clock out of the modems that either one of the GEPs running them from recovered clock off the COMQUEST and then into the network" Unknown: "Why don't you just run yours here internally?, no switch the terrestrial unit" Vagabond: "I can switch, not the internal, I'm switching mine to recovered" Unknown: " No, why don't you switch it to internal?, let it run, use your modem as the network clock, see what happens?" Vagabond: "I can try that, (to the plane), Do you concur?, we'll just try to see if it makes it any cleaner, I don't see how because we've got more of a precision clock externally then we do internally, just now" Unknown: "Looks about the same here" Vagabond: "Yeah, the only way we're going to be able to check this differently is for him to go to precision clock and for us to go to recovered then we have to bring the BERT tester in here to look at it next to the modem we can't run it through the network without changing the whole network around, O.K.?" Unknown: "We can set the, your end up for terminal timing" Vagabond: "That's essentially what I've got well I have to set mine to terminal timing to time the DSU" Unknown: "I can do that" Vagabond: "We can try it, so alright you're going to put your precision clock on, Modified?, and I need to go to loop timing?, we'll probably get faults now if I hit it before you do, yeah I got faults, and it cleared, and it came back, showing 21, 15 to 21 eb/No, I seem to be running pretty good right now, I'm sure I'm not helping anything out though as far as the network is concerned, I'm not totally sure that the cable that we have currently running between the modem and DSU is cabled for terminal timing clock, I'm looking clear here, let me see what my monitor says, I'm running an eb/No of 21 now which doesn't make sense, why would my eb/No get better with clocking?, O.K., let me record my logs here, standby" Unknown: "Name, we're showing no bit errors on the BERT tester here" Vagabond: "Now that's interesting, cause we haven't really changed all the DSUs yet, have we?" Unknown: "We've changed all that's gonna get changed" Vagabond: "O.K., we're running error free now apparently or close to error free now from what I hear" Unknown: "For about the last 45 seconds we've had no errors, do you want to change the data rate back to 1536 to see if the errors stay down?" Vagabond: "We can do that, I'm just getting a last read before I change that, O.K., I've got my reading, no problem, standby, I'm still changing my modulator you should be back up shortly, O.K., I've got my modulator changed, probably won't till, well it should come up shortly I've got a receive sync already and I know I'm not even at the right data rate which doesn't make sense, $hit, sucker, O.K., I've got it both but I'm running faults now, wait a minute faults have been cleared let me see what I've got now, O.K., I've got an eb/No of 13 seven, let me record this, yeah, but let's see what our's is if the BERT sync problems have transferred from one clock source to the other clock source depending on who's doing it we can probably work that out, if we're running error free and you're not then we switch clocks back to the way they were and if you start to run error free and I'm not then we know where the trouble is, Spreader have you changed your data rate, no I'm talking to Spreader to see if he's changed, don't catch him here, don't know where he's at" Spreader: "Name, we're still running error free in here" Vagabond: "O.K., for how long?" Spreader: "Ever since you changed the data rate back up" Vagabond: "We're not logging anymore, unfortunately they took the computer off the automatic log on the BERT tester" Spreader: "Since you changed we've had 127 bit errors" Vagabond: "In how many seconds?, are you able to check that?" Spreader: "All we're looking at is the average bit error rate, it climbs back up to 1.49 instead of 10 to the minus 6, it was running at 10 to minus 8" Vagabond: "Oh, O.K., do you want to switch clock sources back to the other way to see if the problem transfers back to the way it was?" Spreader: "I think we should and then we'll know what we need to fix" Vagabond: "You copy Vanguard, ehh Modified?, roger, I'm switching mine back to external and I need to get some support back here for the DSU to change the data rate to chop blocking, we're still running on coded too" Vagabond: "Modified Vanguard, ehh Vagabond, how you running now?, I lost you, O.K., we've got one other permeation to try here and that was to put myself in internal timing and then put the DSU for the channel externally timing, the last time we went to my internal timing you got worse because we hadn't changed the DSU timing I think that may have been part of the problem, standby, O.K., I'm all set for internal timing and we are timing the DSU channel, roger" Spreader: "We're running errors" Vagabond: "So is he, What's you position now?, you're headed back out west?, between 3B & 4B and then heading west, oh O.K., so you're somewhere between 8 & 8C as far as your heading, Oh my God watch out, we're going to go back to the original setting on the time" Vagabond: "Roger sir, go ahead,we're going to try one other thing here, changing a cable here standby, to see if there's a clocking issue, Spreader this is Vagabond, (no reply), Modified Vagabond, roger sir we changed cables to the homemade cable from the office and it doesn't work I get a bit timing fault, so we got a clocking problem here somewhere I have to recheck the pin outs, going back to Name's cable, we're not sure, Name's cable, name's cable we do not have the timing, the terminal timing pins brought out to go from the modem back to the DSU, apparently they work in one direction but not the other, we'll have to ring it out here because the cable tester here doesn't have a DB37 on it" Vagabond: "Modified Vagabond, O.K., we're back to the initial connection here, but what I think is happening is we don't have the pin out to take the clocks from the COMQUEST to time the DSU, so like I can not really take recovered clock from you cleanly and I can not take recovered clock from the modem cleanly into the DSU so by the time we get it wired you're gonna be out of range, yeah, well he just disconnected the timing I've got a fault too, in fact I'm gonna drop the transmit down because there is no reason to transmit we don't have anything that we are transmitting here, unfortunately we don't have a connector here that shows a DB37 so we have to take a look at what we got I don't think we can wire it up in time maybe he can, no he doesn't, he didn't have a DB25 break out box I brought mine, he should get one" About 5 minutes later the carrier dropped. Alright, I'll get those additions over to Nighthawk 2. On Nighthawk 2 they usually want to have the names, but primarily bodies. Ten pax is gonna be no problem at all as long as they know those 4 additions are gonna be expected as long as somebody is out informing the aircraft if I don't get in contact with them that won't be a problem.
